Well I have never seen that happen. Not where I live anyway. Sometimes they will send out the police but not fire truck unless it is a car accident. We have had to call the paramedics twice to our home in the last two months and both times only the paramedics came. I do remember one time where a police officer came with the paramedics but that was a few years ago.

You never know when you’re gonna need a fire hose! Actually paramedics aren’t trained for rescue type missions, whereas firemen are. Besides, they’re bored anyways.

Typically ambulance companies have fewer "bases" in a city. This means the response time is longer than a fire unit. In my city all fireman are EMT basics which means they administer basic life support. (i.e. electrical defibrillation and CPR) Most fire officers are paramedics and they administer advance life support. (i.e. push drugs such as epinephrine and atropine which are cardiac drugs that help get the heart rhythm back to normal) Fire stations in my area are within a 5 miles radius which in turn increases the response time compared to our private ambulance companies. Our fire medics are on the scene within minutes.
A person’s chance of survival from a heart attacked is greatly increased when early defibrillation and CPR are administered. Literally minutes can be the difference in life and death.
Firemen/firefighters wear many hats now days. We fight fire, extricate from car crashes, respond to medical calls, trauma calls, hazmat calls, high angle rescue, water rescue, trench rescue and even rescue cats in trees.
