Fast descents? Both should be about equal given the tires are about the same width & filled with the same air pressure. Climbing? That would depend upon the gears on both bikes & your own personal strength. If both bikes have the same gears on the front chainring – then check the rear gears & see which one has the biggest low gear (most teeth). I’d be willing to bet they are just about – if not exactly equal.

This may seem like an over-simplified answer – but still holds true. Take both out for an extensive test ride. A bicycle should fit you like a glove. Which one "feels" best to you? Which one are you more comfortable on? Buy it.

Where are buying it? online or a local shop? A local shop should be able to answer your concerns and fit you properly to the bike, which is the real key to a great handling ride.

I’ve owned a lot of road bikes, and I feel aluminum has more drawbacks than pluses if you plan on a lot of saddle time. They’re nice and stiff, and climb well because of that, especially rapid accelerations (also great for sprint finishes out of the saddle) but the downside is a stiff ride, vibration fatigue, numb hands after 3 hours, etc. If you area has great, smooth pavement and most of rides are under 2 hours, perhaps go for them. My Cannondale R500 was punishing from hour 3 on.

I recently bought a Cyfac Gothica CS to add to my stable (my other ride is a Paul Taylor steel with carbon fork and seatstays). Consider a well-made (not mass made in Taiwan) carbon frame. read my blog post about my Cyfac below – my descending has never been better – why? my confidence on the Cyfac is about 20% greater over the Taylor and it was a step up from my previous Litespeed Catalyst.

i;d think for descents, the handling is the critical thing
you;d have to test yourself to see which one is best for you

climbs, it;s just weight and gearing

so there is no really good way to know other than to own both for a year or two

a little knowledge is a dangerous thing
a lot of it is just plain expensive
